Spring 2020 - Covid lockdowns, remember those? My summer was looking full of festivals, gigs and performances with various groups around the country (I'm a bass player). Overnight my identity as a performing musician disappeared.
I took bold action - I bought an expensive Spanish guitar and decided to learn some classical pieces and tell stories over the top of it.
5+ years in the making it has now become a piece of performance art known as The Spell Book.

Nicholas Malin is a storyteller at heart, and as a lifelong musician, he prefers to create the soundtrack to those stories live, which include trance-like rhythms and modern and minimal classical guitar from Bach to Einaudi.
All performances are semi-improvised. Each set is a living, breathing narrative that moves audiences from the familiar into the profound, drawing on spoken word, original song, and a deep well of human wisdom.
Some words are my own, others come from a wide range of voices, from: Bill Hicks, George Clinton, Bashar, William Blake, enlightened masters, Ram Dass and more.
